GMS 6th Grade-Big Day of Service
For the second year in a row, the Goshen Middle School counseling team made arrangements for a Big Day of Service project with GMS 6th grade students. The service project was held this morning, during the first period of the day. Students worked on projects to benefit people and agencies in our community. The day was designed to coincide with and support the Day of Service encouraged by the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King said, “ANYbody can be great because everybody can SERVE.”
A list of the organizations and the activities the students completed:
- Meals On Wheels – Creating place mats for their clients to cheer them up
- Hugs Project – Writing letters to soldiers
- Salvation Army – Creating Valentines for the elderly and those who have lost spouses
- Lions Club – Sorting eye glasses for shipment
- DCS (Department of Child Services) – Creating journals/sketchbooks for kids in foster care
- Hospice of Elkhart County – Creating cards of encouragement for those battling cancer
- GCS Elementary Schools – Students making friendship bracelets for elementary students
- A fellow GMS 6th grader battling leukemia – Creating posters to help with a fundraising effort
- The Depot – Sorting and counting game and puzzle pieces
- Chain Reaction – Cleaning bike parts
- Goodwill – Stuffing envelopes
- GMS – Making RedHawk magnets for next year’s incoming 6th graders
Thank you to all of the adults who helped to arrange this day of service, and to the students who willingly gave their time for the benefit of others.
