Write On Sports Camp
GCS students attending the Write On Sports Camp at Goshen College will be privileged to meet some athletes with local ties during this week and next. Their schedule includes visits with the following athletes:
Today: Sam Grewe, silver medalist in the men’s high jump at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio.
Wednesday, July 12: Sophie Sears, starter on Goshen College basketball team that went to the national Final Four.
Monday, July 17: Bob Toews, ranked No. 49 in U.S. in stair racing.
Tuesday, July 18: Femi Hollinger-Janzen, forward for New England Revolution (video conference) .

In partnership with Write on Sports and Goshen Community Schools, the Communication Department at Goshen College offers a camp for middle school students that teaches writing skills by harnessing their love for sports.

Byron Yake, a former national sports editor with Associated Press and a Goshen College graduate, started Write on Sports in New Jersey in 2005. The program includes an innovative curriculum through which hundreds of students in metro New Jersey have become excited about learning.
The Goshen camp, which runs from July 10 to 21 in 2017, was the first Write on Sports camp outside of New Jersey. Students learn the basic elements of good journalism and apply their knowledge to writing sports stories and creating videos during the camp. As part of the learning process, Write On Sports introduces youth to professional journalists and athletes, whom they interview and then write about.
Field trips include a visit to Notre Dame University, a visit to WNDU Studios (NBC), and attendance at a South Bend Cubs game, where students have a chance to interview team members before the game.
The teaching staff includes certified teachers from Goshen Middle School and Goshen High School, assisted by Goshen College student interns.
Write on Sports, a non-profit, receives funding from individuals, foundations and corporations. It is tuition free. Goshen scholarships are made possible by the Maple Leaf Athletic Club, United Way of Elkhart County, the Windward Foundation and other donors.
